When we first arrived in the Phoenix, AZ area, we couldn’t believe how many vanity license plates we saw. They seemed to be everywhere. My initial research indicates that there is no additional charge for a “personalized” license plate in AZ if the letter/number combination is available. There are extra charges for some license plate designs, but not the standard issue.
Well, no wonder there are so many “personalized” license plates. Some of them are very clever and we would like to present them on this website. We will not use plates that represent people’s names and we will crop them as close as we can to keep the identity of the automobile (exact make, model and color) confidential.
Our theory is that if you cannot decipher a vanity plate in twenty seconds or so, then it is not a successful vanity plate as it pertains to communicating with the outside world. I do understand that people may have a certain license plate because it is an inside joke or means something to just a few people. That’s fine and we respect their feelings. In general, if a plate is to gather the attention of strangers, it must be decipherable in a short period of time so people can enjoy it in passing.
We will post a couple of personalized license plates on a regular basis. I am certain there will be some plates here that we cannot understand and we will ask for comment. Please read the “Terms” on the website before commenting. All earnest comments are welcome.
